Case Study, in the words of Dr. P:
"As a physician executive in transition, I was provided funding for outplacement counseling.
I quickly learned that most large outplacement firms don't have strong expertise and/or interest
in physicians. I also interviewed and thoroughly investigated 3 top physician coaches. Philippa
stood out because of her excellent listening skills and her empathic, but forceful manner. It
was clear she wouldn’t mince words when necessary.
We talked regularly by phone as I weighed job possibilities, searched for work that met my
needs, planned for getting a good start in my next job, and brainstormed approaches to problems
that arose during my first few months on the job. I’ve since had an “ad hoc” phone session
to strategize a sticky situation I was facing.
I find Philippa to be very flexible in orchestrating our use of time during each phone meeting.
I was surprised by how much we accomplished - even for those calls when I wasn’t clear
about what I wanted or needed to work on. She was willing to put any specific perception/ideas
aside if I think it doesn’t “fit,” but persistent when she felt I wasn’t confronting an issue
crucial to my career growth. She was generous in her offer for email communication
between phone calls.
It still astonishes me that I was able to develop such a trusting, open relationship with a coach
that I have never met in person. Before working with Philippa, I had established a career
development “support group” with 3 other physicians I met through my national professional
association. While these monthly phone meetings have been very rewarding, they haven't
provided the opportunity for the intensive work and full candor that my work with Philippa
gave me. She has helped me negotiate a very difficult time, both professionally and personally.
I know many physician colleagues could significantly benefit from working with a coach like her."
